Today is the first day of the new academic year. I have been asked to say a few words of inspiration for our convocation. Here they are. I hope you find them, well, hopeful:
Right here, right now, what you are doing is more important than anything else.
It is more important than pressures from your family and your friends.
It is more important than worries about your health or your finances.
The education you are undertaking, right here, right now, is your future. It is right in front of you.
It is, as someone, a long time ago and far, far away, once told his son, your destiny.
But destinies are not given, they are earned. You will need all the determination, focus and effort you can muster.
So what ever may come from your family and friends, do not let it dissuade you.
What ever may come your way in terms of health or finances, do not let it deter you.
There is nothing more important, right her, right now, than getting this education, than learning all you can, than earning this degree.
For all of us, for all who work to help you learn here at Woodbury, your education is more important than anything else.
It is the only reason we, all of us, are here: your education. It is our present; it is our future.
And if this education is more important than anything else for us, and we’re not even you, how much more important ought it to be for you.
So once again, on this gorgeous summer morning, let us rededicate ourselves to one goal: to learn. Right here, right now.
